Tourism: Mexico at place 38
Our country is full of tourism risks that we need to shake off to move forward. One of many is the risk of drowning in a coastal boat
It is often thought of Mexico's tourism performance in terms of the place we occupy as one of the most visited countries on the planet. In that ranking, we do well, generally being in the sixth spot on the list. Last year, according to what Secretary Miguel Torruco reported in February, our country received more than 21 million international tourists by air. The growth was more than 6 percent. And that tells us one thing: we are big and attractive.

But that is not the only international measurement of the performance of the Mexican tourism sector. Yesterday, the World Economic Forum published its biennial report titled "Travel and Tourism Development Index 2024," which ranks countries based on public policies and various factors that facilitate the development of a sustainable and resilient tourism sector.
This report shows each country's strengths and areas of opportunity. Its sophisticated methodology was developed in conjunction with the University of Surrey and includes areas such as the socio-economic impact of tourism; the quality of health services; hygiene; port infrastructure; the exposure tourists and communities have to crime; etc.
Well, in this report, Mexico is not among the top 10 countries. In fact, it is in 38th place, below countries like Cyprus, Estonia, or Malaysia. Among Latin American countries, Brazil surpasses us in 26th place; and Chile in 31st.

Where did Mexico perform poorly in the evaluation? Mainly in three areas: security; tourist services and infrastructure; and in measuring the socio-economic impact of the tourism sector.

Despite this, Mexico is a country with strong potential, according to the WEF:
"Although Mexico has not yet regained the index score it had before the pandemic, it has improved by 1.1 percent between 2021 and 2024. Mexico is positioned as the country with the best natural resources for tourism, [and] it is also ranked as the fifth country with the best cultural resources in the world."
Our country is full of tourism risks that we need to shake off to advance. One of many is the risk of drowning in a coastal boat, which often provide services with poor operational standards. In recent years, several tourists have died on these boats. It is documented. These events are very rare in other countries. So yes, there is much to improve.
