Assange Goes Home After Being Freed

Julian Assange, after five years of detention in the United Kingdom, has finally reached a plea agreement with U.S. justice, marking a significant turn of events. The news of his freedom was announced, and he has now left the United Kingdom.

According to court documents accessed by CBS, Assange will accept a 62-month prison sentence tomorrow for the conspiracy to obtain and disclose U.S. national defense information.

The WikiLeaks founder will not serve time in U.S. custody as he will receive credit for the time he has already spent imprisoned in the United Kingdom.

The Australian must appear before a federal court in the Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory in the Pacific, where he is expected to plead guilty.

The guilty plea not only concludes an international intrigue criminal case but also ends the years-long persecution by the U.S. against an editor. His popular secret-sharing website has made him a cause célèbre among press freedom advocates, adding a global dimension to the case.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador stated on X, “I celebrate Assange’s release from prison. At least in this case, the Statue of Liberty does not remain an empty symbol.”
