Washington and Caracas draw closer

Venezuela and the United States have agreed to "improve relations" a significant development following the resumption of dialogue between the two countries, announced the chief negotiator of President Nicolás Maduro's delegation.

The president, who is seeking a third re-election on July 28, unexpectedly announced two days ago the holding of this meeting, which comes three months after Washington reinstated sanctions on Venezuelan oil.

Caracas and Washington held secret negotiations between senior officials late last year in Qatar, as announced at the time by Rodríguez, who also heads the Parliament.

Meanwhile, the United States approached the meeting "in good faith." It's important to note that Venezuela and the US have not had diplomatic relations since 2019.
