What a few weeks for American politics. Following the disastrous first debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, the pace of events has quickened. Pressure on Biden increased daily, with calls from Democratic leaders and donors for him to abandon his re-election campaign. Then came the failed attempt on Trump's life, which strengthened him politically and in the media just days before the Republican Convention. The party was at Trump's feet, seemingly invincible until Biden spoiled the party.

Biden's announcement to withdraw from the race changed the game and shifted the spotlight to the Democratic field and, particularly, to Vice President Kamala Harris, who has had a strong start. However, instead of fading into the background, it seems Biden has been relieved of a huge burden, giving him renewed energy to finish his term. Focused on solidifying his legacy and paving the way for Harris, Biden has scored several significant and complex victories. Three stand out and have surprised both inside and outside the United States.

First, the capture (or surrender) of Ismael “Mayo” Zambada and Joaquín Guzmán López, son of El Chapo Guzmán. Without firing a single shot or deploying US troops, the United States now has the most wanted drug trafficker of recent decades and the only leader of the Sinaloa cartel who had evaded justice throughout his life.

The impeccable operation is a decisive victory for the Biden administration and has countered Trump's criticism of Biden's alleged weakness against Mexican cartels. Moreover, it sent a clear message to Mexico regarding the importance of the issue to the United States, considering the passivity and disdain of López Obrador's government, which was not even informed of the events.

The second blow came two days ago, with the largest release of prisoners between Russia and the West since the end of the Cold War. The negotiations involved seven countries, with Biden's direct participation, showcasing the president's best skills. The recovery of 26 detainees, including WSJ journalist Evan Gershkovich, highlights the value of alliances and quiet work over spectacle and the power of politics beyond money.

Finally, the recognition of opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia's victory in Venezuela's presidential election, which will undoubtedly hasten the fall of dictator Nicolás Maduro.

These are enormous triumphs for Joe Biden against those who called for him to leave not only the campaign but also the presidency. A recharged Biden is taking advantage of the last months of his administration to cement his legacy and reclaim his place in history.
