Biden, from Villain to Hero

It only took one life decision for the President of the United States, Joe Biden, to go from being an elderly man stubbornly clinging to power to a hero for millions of Americans. This was the image projected by the Democratic National Convention, held in Chicago, during the week that just ended.

After his appearance at the United Center on Monday, the Democrats overflowed with expressions of love and respect for the outgoing president. The chant “We love Joe!” lasted no less than five minutes, and it’s no wonder; possibly reluctantly, but he understood that it was time to step away from the political race.
A significant factor that led to this decision was the disastrous debate he had with an old hand at causing a stir, Donald Trump, because the face-to-face didn’t last much longer. If it hadn’t been, it would have been a knockout blow to Biden, the kind that retires you without fanfare.
On that occasion, the president claimed to be suffering from a cold, and no one questions that, but his age—81 years old—is no small thing, along with his stuttering and, according to some U.S. media, the six types of ailments he currently suffers from. The outlook was not promising.

In these conditions, thinking about a second debate with Trump was almost like burying all hopes of keeping himself and his party in the White House. Even worse, it would have been nearly impossible to stop the tycoon, who today doesn’t know how to reverse his downhill slide and has even had to resort to Artificial Intelligence to try to keep the ship from sinking.

Biden said in his farewell speech, “I made many mistakes, but I gave you my best.” He also made it clear that for him, things in the world of politics have not been easy: first, he was judged for being too young when he entered the Senate—29 years old—and then, too old to continue being President.
Perhaps last Monday, we witnessed the most human side of Biden, who was introduced by his daughter Ashley, appeared in a suit and blue tie, and was seen for a few seconds wiping away some tears. He made it clear that for him, family comes first—his children and his wife, Jill, whom he called the rock of the family.
At the convention, Biden committed to becoming the main volunteer to ensure that Kamala Harris, his friend, as he reiterated in his speech, becomes none other than the first woman President of the United States, with the added distinction of being African American and of Indian descent.
Undoubtedly, the passage of time is relentless; it gives much wisdom but takes away much energy, and it reaches even the powerful. The good thing is that Biden decided to step aside, and with that, he injected youth into the Democratic Party, which already looked like an aging block.
It won’t be known until November 5, or later, whether the Democrats will remain in power. But what is already clear is that Biden has become a Democratic hero and has secured his place in the political history of the United States.
