Bureaucratic procedures can be tiring and difficult, but ever since the Mexican government began its digitalization efforts, allowing thousands of procedures to be done online, there are now many options to complete them.

The Tax Administration Service (SAT) has joined these efforts to digitalize procedures and announced that starting in October this year, obtaining the Federal Taxpayer Registry (RFC) and electronic signature (e.firma) will be easier.

The announcement was made through its social media, where it shared how the process will work from now on: “With these actions, the SAT reaffirms its commitment to streamline procedures and provide the best service to taxpayers, both in person and remotely,” the institution wrote on X.

How can I get my RFC and e.firma? For the RFC registration process for individuals and legal entities, taxpayers will no longer need to pre-register on the SAT portal before their appointment. They will only need to present a valid voter ID with a visible and complete address.

For those who wish to renew their e.firma, if it has expired within the last year, they will simply need to schedule an appointment and attend with official identification and a USB drive to store the information. Additionally, the tax situation certificate can be obtained using a fingerprint or ID from anywhere through the SAT portal, SAT ID, SAT Mobile, CAT, and Virtual Office.

How to schedule an appointment with the SAT

  1. Click the “start” button.
  2. Click the “schedule an appointment” button, select your state, the nearest module, and the service you need.
  3. Enter your full name, RFC, and email address.

  5. Read and accept the terms and conditions of the application.

  7. You will receive the appointment confirmation in your email.

Save the assigned appointment number and confirmation, as they will be useful if you need to check or cancel your reservation.

Before requesting an appointment, make sure you meet the requirements for the procedure or service you need, and don’t forget to arrive 5 minutes before the reserved time to avoid losing your appointment.

Mexicans residing in the U.S. can also obtain their RFC

In May of this year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Tax Administration Service signed a General Collaboration Agreement between both entities to make it possible for Mexicans living abroad, without tax obligations in Mexico, to register in the Federal Taxpayer Registry (RFC).

The RFC is an identity tool that will allow our compatriots to access a variety of benefits such as opening bank accounts, obtaining credit, accessing social programs, among others.

For example, with RFC registration from abroad, Mexicans will be able to meet one of the requirements to access the programs offered by the Institute of the National Housing Fund for Workers (Infonavit), which allows them to acquire property in Mexican territory.

The application for RFC registration for individuals can be done online, through the Tax Administration Service’s virtual office (SAT), and from anywhere in the world. Mexicans abroad can request information and guidance on the process through the Financial Advisory Windows at Mexico’s consulates abroad.
