A month ago we titled this column “Narco or Menso”. We talked about the criminal career of Genaro García Luna, which began in the Salinas administration when he started working at CISEN. With Fox, thanks to the prosecutor Macedo de la Concha, he went through the Judicial Police and the AFI.

In 2006, Felipe Calderón appointed him Secretary of Public Security, and in 2009 he formed the Federal Police, and together with the Mexico Platform, he coordinated 36 thousand officers.

Were they working to protect us or to protect a drug cartel? According to the evidence from the United States, the latter. In 2013, Forbes magazine (we also said in that September text) included him in a list of the 10 most corrupt men in our country.

We asked on that occasion: Was the war against drugs a comedy by the PAN government to benefit the Sinaloa Cartel? And we answered: If Calderón was not in on the act, then did he not know that he appointed a drug trafficker to the Secretariat of Public Security? Drug dealer or idiot; either option makes him an accomplice to this criminal story.

Today, dressed as a civilian or as a prisoner, reading a text or remaining silent, he will be sentenced on five charges against him. Perhaps 20 years, or perhaps life imprisonment. The scheme of million-dollar bribes and the threats to other inmates to speak well of him were of no use. His day came and so did the former president of Michoacán.

Everything changed for him, and for his boss (Felipe) on December 9, 2019, when he was arrested by the DEA outside his apartment in Irving, Texas. His arrest ended his criminal career, and for the former President, the possibility of defending himself before the 4T. He had to go into self-exile in Spain.

Prisoner 59745-177 took his family, the National Action Party and, above all, Calderón Hinojosa, who will also be sentenced this Wednesday at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, with him. COLOPHON
