Olivia Díaz is the councilwoman for District 3 in Las Vegas, Nevada. She is the first Latina to hold this position, which she achieved in 2019.

In the United States, a council member’s role is like that of a councilor in Mexico. But what specific responsibilities does a council member hold? These officials operate at the municipal level and oversee public works, assess road conditions, maintain traffic signs, issue business licenses, and review development proposals for housing and business projects. A vital aspect of their job is providing community services, including cultural and recreational activities for the elderly and children. Their office also allocates 40% of the public safety budget. Beyond these tasks, they manage numerous other responsibilities, reflecting the diverse needs of each neighborhood.

The Mexican community in Las Vegas is vital for keeping the city vibrant. Their skills ensure the smooth operation of hotels and casinos. Many community members are employed in kitchens, housekeeping, facility maintenance, landscaping, and the construction sector.

Patricia Cortés defines the people clearly, “the community is very brave and very generous”

Olivia’s parents come from the lovely town of Durango, Mexico, near Tepehuanes. Her paternal grandfather was a bracero, and back then, it was much easier for migrant workers to come to the United States due to a strong demand for labor. Family structures were also different; for instance, Olivia’s father had seven siblings! At just 16, her grandfather went to Northern California to work in agriculture. Later, an uncle in Las Vegas invited them for a visit, and it was here, in the early 1970s, that Olivia’s father met and married her mother. This union made Olivia the first child born in Las Vegas. For over 35 years, her father dedicated himself to his job as a casino porter, taking care of various cleaning duties. Like many other migrants, he did everything he could to make life better for his family. His unwavering hard work and commitment profoundly influenced Olivia, shaping her outlook on life. Meanwhile, her mother took on the incredible task of caring for six children—a real challenge in a bustling city like Las Vegas. Growing up, Olivia’s family lived in a neighborhood touched by gang presence, where it was all too easy for young children to lose their way.

Las Vegas, like many vibrant cities across the U.S., is working to address the important issue of homelessness. Many individuals who find themselves without a home may face tough challenges that impact their mental well-being or have turned to substances for relief. Interestingly, the use of fentanyl has notably increased in the city, highlighting the need for support and understanding.

To tackle this important issue, we’re excited to share that $25 million has been invested in the Courtyard, a welcoming navigation center where those experiencing homelessness can access clean bathrooms, refreshing showers, and a cozy spot to rest. Plus, there’s a caring doctor on-site to help anyone in need of shelter. Considering the city’s desert climate, the Courtyard is equipped with air conditioning, which is not just a comfort—it can truly save lives by protecting individuals from heat strokes.

Olivia recognizes her family’s cherished values, beautifully reflected in the vibrant Mexican community: a deep love for family, a strong commitment to hard work, and a heartfelt belief in earning rather than simply receiving. Every time she visits the towns from which her family hails, she feels this warm camaraderie and genuine sense of community, where people truly care about one another.

As elections approach, Latinos represent a growing demographic whose voting power is becoming more influential in the United States. Olivia hopes this increased significance will enable them to elect leaders who recognize and appreciate their worth. However, the valuable contributions of this community remain largely unacknowledged. They undertake the most challenging yet vital jobs; for example, she estimates that approximately 60% of construction union members are Latino, and a significant number in culinary unions are also from this community.

Olivia recognizes that economic conditions have declined, marked by soaring inflation and falling family incomes. The stress and anxiety tied to supporting families represent significant concerns for the migrant and Latino communities. These obstacles might affect political engagement; despite their efforts, improvements in their living situations remain elusive.

Olivia sees this as a wonderful opportunity to engage even more in local and national politics. She feels it’s important for everyone in the community to realize how vital it is to choose leaders who genuinely care about their well-being and, most importantly, show them the respect they deserve. Olivia is delighted to see that Mexico might have a female president before the United States and thinks there’s a lot for our northern neighbor to learn from Mexico in this area.

Olivia thoughtfully considers her future at different stages, reflecting on how she can contribute positively to her community. She understands that it is the community that recognizes her efforts and may invite her to continue serving them. With a rich background in politics and public service, she proudly stands as one of the first four Latina representatives in Nevada and has previously served as a state assemblywoman. Her commitment never wavers, and she believes that by staying true to her values, she can follow the path inspired by her community.
