The passing of former President Jimmy Carter underscored his significant role as a beloved public figure for many citizens.

Carter is seen as a weak president; however, he was an outstanding former leader.

From the outset, questions clouded Carter’s presidency. As noted by Willis Sparks in GZero, many perceived him as a lackluster governor of Georgia who unexpectedly ascended to the White House. “He was regarded as the approachable, ordinary individual the nation hoped could counter the cynicism and disillusion from the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal. Several Georgians felt he was caught off guard by the role’s responsibilities.”

He genuinely achieved significant milestones as president, particularly in fostering peace between Israel and Egypt. However, many believed he lacked the necessary energy for the role, often appearing burdened by his focus on details.

In 1979, he delivered the famous “malaise speech,” urging Americans confronted with high inflation, rising unemployment, and an energy crisis to look inward and reevaluate their situation values.

From 1976 to 1980, Carter’s presidency was vital during a turbulent period both domestically and internationally.

His insistence that the United States adhere to its stated ethical principles led him to give up control of the Panama Canal, a decision that received disapproval from many in his country.

During a state visit to Mexico, he reflected on his experience of “Montezuma’s revenge” while on his honeymoon there.

Carter also confronted the first major oil embargo imposed by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), which sought to drive up hydrocarbon prices. The sight of long lines of cars waiting to refuel delivered a significant blow to his administration.

Furthermore, he faced the revolution that resulted in the overthrow of the Shah of Iran and the seizure of nearly 200 hostages at the U.S. embassy in Tehran. This incident, coupled with the failed military attempt to rescue them, underscored the challenges his administration faced and significantly contributed to his defeat by Ronald Reagan in the 1980 elections.

Carter, a devoted Methodist, accepted his defeat and committed himself to leading by example. His efforts to promote peace and facilitate international negotiations led to the establishment of the Carter Center at Emory University and the formation of an influential election observation group, which has been particularly impactful in Latin America.

Carter devoted much of his free time to construction projects and was frequently seen in casual clothing with a tool belt around his waist. This is how Americans perceive him.

Although Carter may not have been especially popular during his presidency, he garnered respect and affection as a former president.
