Working poverty in Mexico reaches historic low

Located at an indicator of 35.8 percent in the first quarter of this year, working poverty in Mexico is at historic lows since it is at its lowest level for nearly 17 years, when it registered a value of 35.2 percent, according to information from BBVA Mexico.

“In this way, working poverty in Mexico is not only at lower levels than those observed prior to the pandemic, but is also lower than the levels reported before the global financial recession of 2008-2009,” highlighted Guillermo Cárdenas Salgado, senior economist in Mexico at BBVA Research.

It should be noted that working poverty measures the percentage of the population in households in Mexico that had a per capita labor income less than the monetary amount of a food basket defined for urban and rural areas.

Thus, the specialist said, in both urban and rural areas, working poverty has decreased to levels lower than those observed prior to the pandemic.

However, the recovery was faster in rural areas, since since the first quarter of last year, working poverty was already at lower levels than those reported prior to the pandemic.

However, he noted, by federal entity, 14 states still observed levels of working poverty higher than those recorded in the first quarter of 2020, the period when the COVID-19 pandemic was declared.

Another relevant fact, he detailed, is that from the first quarter of 2015 to the same period of this year, it was observed that the population employed in a formal situation, only 1 percent is in working poverty, while the informality rate was 23.5 percent. cent on average.

Thus, informality is one of the causes to which a greater possibility of being in working poverty can be attributed, he emphasized.
