Identity, Sobriety and Consistency: The Messages in Claudia Sheinbaum’s Attire
Key elements in the outfit of Mexico’s first female president. A picture is worth a thousand words, and the clothing we choose is a highly accurate form of non-verbal communication that loudly expresses what we don’t say with words.
This is why the choice of attire for a leader on the day they take office is so important. It’s worth noting that this will be the image that goes down in history.

The chosen attire represents the authority and power of the position. It’s a way to demonstrate respect for the occasion and the importance of the role. Sometimes, an outfit can send a political or ideological message, such as the use of certain colors. The media impact is crucial since images of the inauguration are widely shared in the media and on social networks. A well-chosen outfit can create a positive and memorable impression.
In the case of female leaders, the choice of clothing can be an act of empowerment and a way to challenge gender stereotypes in traditionally male-dominated political settings.
In Mexico, this is the first time we have a female president. As such, there is no set protocol. But generally, it’s a formal investiture event.

Michelle Bachelet, during her second inauguration as President of Chile, wore a navy-blue skirt suit with white details on the cuffs and collar. She paired it with nude stockings and low black shoes, completing the look with a brooch. She has maintained an elegant and sober style throughout her career.

Tsai Ing-Wen, when she assumed the presidency of Taiwan in May 2016, wore an ivory blazer, white blouse, and black pants. Her look was simple, sober, and elegant, with no visible accessories. Her hairstyle was simple, and her makeup was natural.
I must say, dear reader, that in terms of image, our new president did very well. Everything about her look was perfectly well-coordinated, and every element sent consistent messages. She wore an ivory-white dress with hand-embroidered details, crafted with needle and crochet by artisan Claudia Vázquez Aquino from Oaxaca.
Her cultural attire honored the ancestral traditions of Mexican culture and its peoples, creating an immediate connection and identification with them. Her signature ponytail was replaced by a simple yet elegant bun, which communicated a well-groomed, meticulous, and orderly appearance, suggesting that she is ready to take on responsibilities and face challenges.
In this context of an inauguration, the bun could reflect the president’s stance—focused on service, while also highlighting her femininity in a sophisticated way.
As for accessories, it is crucial to choose them in a way that complements the outfit without overwhelming it. Sheinbaum wore small pearl earrings that brightened her face and conveyed elegance and a sense of tradition, as pearls are associated with good taste, confidence, and refined style.
And once again, pearls are very feminine. This time, she didn’t wear her usual scarf. The white color of the dress also sends an important message: purity, clarity, freshness, and it conveys a sense of calm and peace.
In certain cultures, white symbolizes new beginnings. In fashion, it evokes sophistication and elegance. Her makeup was also well done—simple, yet it highlighted her features. Ideal for the time of day the event took place. Makeup and hairstyle are an essential part of a person’s image. Under no circumstances should they distract from the solemnity of the event.
It’s not trivial to pay attention to the clothing of a president during their inauguration; it’s much more than a simple fashion choice. It’s a manifestation of their vision, values, and connection to their country.
Let’s hope that the image of our new president, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, at her inauguration is a prelude to how her term will be.
