Filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, renowned for classics like The Godfather and Apocalypse Now!, is set to receive multiple accolades honoring his career at the Morelia International Film Festival. The five-time Oscar winner will be awarded the Filmoteca Medal by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

This prestigious recognition, given by UNAM to top-tier filmmakers, will be presented during the upcoming Morelia International Film Festival, which begins October 18 in the Michoacán capital. Coppola, considered a pillar of the New Hollywood movement, is acclaimed for masterpieces such as The Godfather trilogy, Apocalypse Now!, and Dracula, among others.

In addition to this honor, he will also receive the festival’s Artistic Excellence Award. The festival, along with the Guadalajara International Film Festival, is among the most prominent film events in Mexico.

Coppola to Premiere New Film

The legendary director, born in the United States in 1939, will visit Morelia to premiere Megalopolis, his latest film, which was previously showcased at the Cannes Film Festival. Starring Adam Driver, Megalopolis is considered Coppola’s most personal project, conceptualized as far back as 1982. The director has poured years of effort into this film, though it received mixed reviews from critics.

Alexander Payne to Receive Filmoteca MedalDuring the Morelia cinematic event, American filmmaker Alexander Payne, known for films like Downsizing, Nebraska, and the recent Oscar-nominated The Holdovers, will also be honored with the Filmoteca Medal from UNAM for his cinematic contributions. The medal, crafted from 99 percent silver reclaimed through the film development process in the university’s lab, was designed by sculptor Lorenzo Rafael and is regarded as UNAM’s highest award.
