Nearly 200,000 Pesos: Average Annual Cost of Breast Cancer Care in Mexico

An insurance policy to cover the expenses of breast cancer costs between 11,000 and 82,000 pesos annually on average, compared to the approximately 200,000 pesos the disease could cost in a year, according to the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Financial Services Users (Condusef) and the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions (AMIS).

José Antonio Barreiro Páez, Director of Medical and Health Expenses at AMIS, stated that all health and medical expense insurance policies in Mexico cover cancer. He emphasized that this disease is covered by all insurance policies in their basic form, but if the person already has a pre-existing condition, it will be excluded.

Additionally, he noted that policies usually have a waiting period that can last around two years.

In this regard, according to Condusef’s major medical expenses insurance cost simulator, a basic coverage plan for women ranges from 11,163 to 39,599.67 pesos for those aged 20 to 30 years old.For women aged 31 to 40, it ranges from 16,520.87 to 47,479.03 pesos, and for those aged 40 to 50, it ranges from 21,941.01 to 81,967.12 pesos, considering an individual basic plan from the insurer offering the most services and with a deductible of approximately 10,000 pesos.

Meanwhile, in 2023 alone, the average cost of breast cancer was 198,500 pesos, with a record high of up to 5.2 million pesos in the most catastrophic case reported in 2022.
