Reconstruction Efforts in Acapulco: Government Allocates 33 Billion Pesos, Post-Hurricane Otis

Over 33 billion pesos have been allocated for the reconstruction of Acapulco and Coyuca de Benítez, Guerrero, following the devastation caused by Hurricane Otis, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced in his morning press conference yesterday. He emphasized that aid for those affected and the reconstruction efforts were carried out directly, without relying on mechanisms like the Fonden (Natural Disasters Fund).

During the reconstruction progress report, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, detailed that through the "Tianguis del Bienestar" initiative, more than a million new goods were distributed to 61,742 families in 159 communities. The items included footwear, clothing, rolls of fabric, blenders, washing machines, freezers, irons, and more—goods that were previously stored in warehouses and often stolen. "This way, we are returning to the people of Acapulco and Coyuca de Benítez what rightfully belongs to them," she said.

Ariadna Montiel, Secretary of Social Welfare, reported that the total investment for the affected families was over 15 billion pesos and announced the launch of the "Painting Acapulco" program in July, with a budget of 857 million pesos.

As part of the reconstruction plan, 301,076 homes received 8,000 pesos each for cleaning, between 35,000 and 60,000 pesos for housing reconstruction, and 45,000 pesos for 30,196 commercial establishments. Additionally, 26,634 farmers were assisted with an investment of 199 million pesos, and 7,975 fishermen received 59.8 million pesos.

Under the "Our School" program, 928 schools were benefited with an investment of 314 million pesos. Education Secretary Leticia Ramírez confirmed that 100% of the classrooms have reopened.

Infrastructure, Communications, and Transport Secretary Jorge Nuño Lara stated that reconstruction of the affected transportation routes will be completed this week, with an investment of 271 million pesos. This includes the reconstruction of the Mendizábal bridge, 19 urban roads, the stabilization of the landslide on Scenic Avenue, and the completion of works at Acapulco airport.

Governor of Guerrero Evelyn Salgado mentioned a new construction model with different materials and banned rooftop billboards, among other regulations. "The regulations for building condominiums and hotels have already been changed," she emphasized.

She highlighted that 206 hotels are operational, 292 supply and consumption stores are open, representing 97.3% of the 300 registered branches, and there is a 92% progress in reopening bank branches with services.

Naval Secretary José Rafael Ojeda Durán reported that 31 people remain missing, and 17 bodies have been recovered, with search efforts ongoing. Defense Secretary Luis Cresencio Sandoval added that a special command of the National Guard in Acapulco, consisting of four battalions with 1,100 personnel, will be operational by September to cover security in both the port and Coyuca.
