The vote of Mexico City residents living abroad increased by 120% in 2024, reported the IECM

The Electoral Institute of Mexico City (IECM) has reported a significant and noteworthy 120 percent increase in the number of foreigners participating in the election of the Head of Government of Mexico City. This substantial surge in foreign voting, observed in the 2024 electoral process, is a clear and significant shift from the 2018 figures, indicating a changing landscape in our electoral process.

Looking back at the historical data, the trend of foreign voting in Mexico City is even more striking. In 2012, when the option to vote from outside the country was introduced, a modest 7,915 votes were cast. Fast forward to 2024, and this number has skyrocketed to 45,873, marking a staggering 479 percent increase over just 12 years.

Electronic Voting Saw Higher Participation

In the most recent electoral process, a total of 50,282 people participated in the election of the Head of Government. The majority, 34,325, chose the convenient and inclusive method of electronic voting, followed by 7,166 who opted for postal voting, and 4,382 who voted in person at one of the 23 consular locations. This data underscores the democratic nature of our voting methods, providing a comprehensive view of the preferences of the participants.

For in-person voting, 3,135 people from Mexico City had previously expressed their interest in voting through this method. Additionally, up to 34,500 people from across the country without prior registration (1,500 per consular location) could cast their vote with a valid voter ID.

In the case of in-person voting, 20 modules were set up in the United States, where 1,291 votes were cast. Outside of the U.S., 3 consular locations recorded 1,844 votes, distributed as follows: 860 in Madrid, 682 in Paris, and 302 in Montreal.

Regarding the vote from abroad to elect the Migrant Deputation in the 2023-2024 Ordinary Local Electoral Process, 45,742 votes were received, marking a 413 percent increase compared to the 8,906 votes in 2021, which was the first time the capital’s community residing abroad could elect this position.

The distribution of votes for the Migrant Deputation was similar: 34,325 through electronic voting, 7,035 by mail, and 4,382 in person. The number of votes cast at the consulates in Spain, France, and Canada for the Migrant Deputation was the same as in the voting for the Head of Government.
