In the first 100 days of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration, the number of intentional homicides has decrased by 16.3%
Intentional homicides have decreased in six of the seven states where half of the victims of this crime are concentrated: Baja California, State of Mexico, Chihuahua, Guerrero, Nuevo León, and Jalisco
- Between September and December 2024 there was also a reduction in all high impact crimes.
- From October to December 2024, 7,720 suspects were arrested for high impact crimes, while more than 3,600 firearms and 66.5 tons of drugs were seized, including 1,168 kilos of fentanyl and 561,000 fentanyl pills.
- President Claudia Sheinbaum pointed out that the recent National Firearms Commerce and Trafficking Assessment of the U.S. Department of Justice acknowledges the illegal trafficking of weapons from the United States to Mexico. Therefore, it will be an issue to be addressed with the incoming administration headed by President Donald Trump.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo reported that in the first 100 days of her administration the daily average number of victims of intentional homicides decreased by 16.3 percent between September and December 2024. She said this was a result of the National Security Strategy and pointed out that the goal for this year is to maintain this downward trend.

“Today’s result is important, it indicates 16 percent fewer homicides from September to December. It is a result of work that sometimes is not visible on an everyday basis, but nevertheless represents a great effort on the part of the Security Cabinet. Of course we have to work every day because it can go up again if one is not aware of what is being done, but there is a defined strategy and there is permanent daily work, and a commitment on the part of the team of the Government of Mexico, and of the Federal Attorney General’s Office.
“With all the problems we had in the judicial branch, because it must be said, these are very important results that are related to a strategy that we established. For this year, the objective is to continue with this trend of reducing (the crime numbers) and working every single day,” she emphasized in the morning press conference, ‘Las mañaneras del pueblo’.
The President explained that the National Security Strategy seeks to ensure peace, specifically based on attending to the root causes of crime, preventing young people, boys and girls, from viewing violence as a life vocation.

“It is up to us to prevent crime and pay full attention to its root causes so that there can be no apology for violence, we are building peace,” she added.

Sheinbaum explained that the recent National Firearms Commerce and Trafficking Assessment (NFCTA) of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) of the U.S. Department of Justice, acknowledges the trafficking of weapons from the United States to Mexico. Therefore, in line with the lawsuit filed by the government of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador against companies that produce such weapons, will seek to establish a dialogue with the administration of President-elect Donald Trump to address this issue.
“They are now acknowledging what we have been saying here for a long time. When weapons are seized, which was not detailed in this report, but in the past it was said: ‘75 percent of the weapons that were seized come from the United States.’ And today the Department of Justice recognizes this. That is why collaboration is so important. That is why we are certain that with President Trump there will be coordination and collaboration on different issues and in particular on the issue of public security. And we are particularly interested in the entry of weapons from the United States into Mexico,” she added.
The Executive Secretary of the National Public Security System, Marcela Figueroa Franco, explained that the 16.3 percent reduction in intentional homicides is due to the decline in the daily average number of victims of this crime from 87 in September to 72.8 in December 2024, a month with fewer victims of intentional homicide.
In addition, she noted that six of the seven states that concentrate 49.4 percent of the victims of intentional homicides have posted a decrease in their daily average of such crimes between September and December: Baja California, State of Mexico, Chihuahua, Jalisco, Guerrero and Nuevo Leon. However, Guanajuato, the state with the highest number of intentional homicides in 2024, saw its numbers increase in that period.
Figueroa also highlighted that in the first 100 days of President Sheinbaum’s administration there was a reduction in the daily average of high impact crimes. Femicides were down -26.5 percent; intentional injuries by gunshot, -19.7 percent; extortions, -10. 6 percent; all robberies with violence, -4.7 percent; home robberies with violence -9.7 percent; vehicle robbery with violence, -4.1 percent; truck robberies with violence -6.5 percent; street robberies with violence -10.6 percent; and business robberies with violence -2.8 percent.

Likewise, Garcia Harfuch noted that from October 1, 2024 to January 8, 2025, 115 clandestine laboratories for the production of methamphetamines have been dismantled in Baja California, State of Mexico, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Michoacán, Querétaro, Sinaloa and Sonora, and 148,609 liters and 28,261 kilos of chemical substances, 157 organic synthesis reactors, and 62 condensers, 56 distillers have ben seized, representing an economic loss of almost 27.12 billion pesos (US$1.32 billion) for criminal organizations.
Minister of the Interior Rosa Icela Rodríguez Velázquez reported that, as part of the Attention to the Underlying Causes, the Mexican Government continues to attend to the municipalities of León and Celaya, in Guanajuato; to San Cristóbal de las Casas, Frontera Comalapa; Pantelhó ,and La Trinitaria in Chiapas; to Centro, in Tabasco; to Chimalhuacán, in the State of Mexico; to Acapulco and Chilpancingo, in Guerrero; as well as to Tijuana, Baja California. As a result, 329 members of special brigades have been deployed, who have made 31,000 house-to-house visits. In addition, 27 Peace Committees have been formed; 18 Peace Fairs have been held and 106,000 visits have been made.
Rodriguez reported that starting tomorrow, January 10, the strategy “Yes to disarmament, yes to peace” will begin in the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City, with the goal of exchanging firearms and cartridges for cash, anonymously and voluntarily in the atriums and installations of temples and churches of all religious denominations. In addition, there will also be an exchange of war toys for playful and educational options.
