As part of the National Security Strategy, in Baja California, personnel from the ministries of Defense (Defensa), Navy (Semar), Public Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), the National Guard (GN), and the Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR detained three suspects who were transporting 42 kilos of fentanyl and seven kilos of heroin in a vehicle.

The officers, who were carrying out security duties on the Mexicali - Tijuana highway in the municipality of Tecate, observed three people traveling in a vehicle who, upon noticing the presence of the law enforcement officials, tried to evade them. To rule out any unlawful conduct, the officers stopped the vehicle and conducted a preventive search.

Inside the car they found several packages containing 42 kilos of fentanyl and seven kilos of heroin. The suspects, a woman and a man, both 48 years of age, and a teenager, were informed of the reason for their arrest, their legal rights were read to them and, together with the seized drugs, they were handed over to the agent of the corresponding Public Prosecutor’s Office. The latter will complete the investigative file of the case and will determine the suspects legal situation.

After cross-checking information, it was learned that those arrested are linked to a criminal group operating in northern Mexico. The street value of the seized drugs amounts to more than 300 million pesos (US$15.07 million).

The institutions of the Security Cabinet reaffirm their commitment to work in coordinated fashion to stop the generators of violence from operating in the country.
