On Sunday, former U.S. President Donald Trump proposed hiring an additional 10,000 Border Patrol agents, offering them a $10,000 bonus for their recruitment and retention. This proposal follows the derailment of a bipartisan bill earlier this year that included funding for more border personnel. Trump made this promise during a rally in Prescott Valley, Arizona, about 418 kilometers north of the state’s border with Mexico. He accepted an endorsement from the National Border Patrol Council, a union that supported him in his previous campaigns.

Trump has made illegal immigration the centerpiece of his campaign, blaming Vice President Kamala Harris for a record increase in unauthorized crossings at the border. He frequently labels individuals entering the country illegally as invaders and criminals, committing to carry out the largest deportation operation in U.S. history if elected again.

This year, he challenged the union when he persuaded Republicans to reject a bipartisan immigration bill that contained additional resources for border security. According to the White House, this bill would have funded 1,500 new positions in Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which includes the Border Patrol. At that time, Trump stated that he did not want to give Democrats a political victory on this crucial issue, calling the proposed legislation a “horrible bill.”

Trump and his allies often refer to Harris as the “person in charge of border policies,” despite her never having held that title. President Joe Biden did ask Harris at the start of his administration to study the “root causes” of migration from Central America.

“If we allow Harris — the person in charge of border policies — to win this election, every city, every community in this great country will go to hell,” said union leader Paul Pérez while standing beside Trump on stage, accompanied by a group of agents.

Trump remains committed to completing the southern border wall if he returns to the White House. He frequently highlights his comparatively low border crossing numbers against those recorded during Biden’s first three years in office, although current crossings have again declined to levels similar to or below those seen during most of Trump’s term.

During Trump’s administration, the country also faced challenges in reducing border crossings before the COVID-19 pandemic forced international border closures. His tenure was marked by controversial measures, such as the separation of immigrant children from their parents, part of various surveillance programs implemented to control illegal immigration.

On Sunday, Trump stated that border agents deserve higher salaries and bonuses, lamenting what he described as Biden and Harris’s negligence toward the border.
