The binational organization Fuerza Migrante reiterated its call to Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente to make an urgent and serious decision regarding the case.

The human rights commission of the binational organization Fuerza Migrante, which focuses on the defense, protection, and promotion of the human rights of the Mexican community residing in the United States, has received multiple communications from its members expressing concern about the issue.

“It is unacceptable for someone who has been accused of abuse and harassment against women to hold such a position; keeping him there contradicts the ‘feminist foreign policy’ that the Government of Mexico is promoting,” expressed Fuerza Migrante.

It is worth noting that the former Consul of Mexico in New York has not only been accused by 16 women—employees of the Mexican Foreign Service and the General Consulate within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs—of violence, abuse, workplace harassment, and gender-based discrimination.

In addition, his ability to fulfill the assigned role is being questioned.

“There is a very clear lack of sensitivity from Mr. Jorge Islas regarding the daily issues faced by the Mexican migrant community in general. Mexico is at the forefront of consular services worldwide. No other country has the consular network that Mexico does. The coordination of that network should be led by someone qualified and with a good reputation,” they emphasized.

Regarding his previous performance, the statement provided to this outlet points out that over six years, instead of fostering unity, he caused an unnecessary crisis and division among local organizations, showing a lack of interest in addressing the complexity of the Mexican communities he was responsible for, along with their short- and long-term challenges.

“This highlights his lack of experience in the consular field…his general disinterest and lack of empathy.”

Fuerza Migrante stressed that it is vital for those holding any level of position in consular service to be able to foster an environment of trust, respect, and support for the Mexican migrant community.

“We are confident that there are individuals within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who have the necessary experience and commitment to assume this important responsibility. Fuerza Migrante will continue to insist on the need for the voice of the Mexican community living abroad to be heard,” they concluded.
