After various voices from the migrant community and employees of the Mexican Foreign Service came together to denounce cases of harassment and express their concerns regarding Jorge Islas López’s performance as head of the Mexican Consulate in New York, the former consul publicly declined the invitation from the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, to lead the future General Coordination of Consulates.

“The foregoing is to allow me to respond, within the framework of the law, to the campaign of unfounded accusations and malicious lies of which I have been the target in recent days, with the conviction that I have always conducted myself with honesty and integrity in my duties...” he stated in a message addressed to the public.

In response, the binational organization Fuerza Migrante, one of the groups that called for reconsidering Islas López’s appointment, expressed regret that, in his resignation, Jorge Islas continues to minimize and downplay the accusations of workplace harassment and gender-based violence by women who worked under his administration at the Consulate General of Mexico in New York.

“We highlight the significant mobilization capacity of community groups, the courage of various former Mexican Foreign Service (SEM) officials and local employees who came forward to make their cases visible... It is not a campaign of unfounded accusations and malicious lies as he claims in his resignation letter”, Fuerza Migrante.
